I worked for Halifax bank many moons ago and on my inductions we had quite a hyper trainer who was excited to tells us a little story about a bear. This was a happy little bear until he got put in a box, he was not happy and closed off ....
Moral of this story .... well first don't smoke crack and then try training a group of people, but there is a point in there.
What the train was trying to say was when dealing with customers, do not give closed questions. When you call help lines and you get some @rse (cough BT cough) giving you one word answers "yes" "no" "Maybe" .... I am sure we all know the feeling.
I see many people doing this in MMA and BJJ ... some times when asking questions you get the an answer which is closed off.
Guy 1 - "how do I get out of this arm bar?"
Coach - "don't get put in it"
This is a prime example of a closed question the coach hasn't put bear in a box he has chained the little f**ker up and beat him down.
We all have different attributes (flexibility, strength ... etc) so the answer you get, might not work for you, but don't dismiss it straight away, play and experiment in sparring and coaches if you just because you don't know the answer to a students question don't just make some rubbish up or dismiss the question, learn and experiment ... you never know, you might invent the new twister or x guard.
